Our holiday 'switch off' guide!

Whether your holiday this year is a fortnight in the Caribbean or a week at home, one thing that is vital is that you use the time to fully switch off from your day job.
You'll only get the benefit of a break by making a break - here's how:

Don’t feel guilty – rested employees are healthier, more creative and more productive than their stressed colleagues.

Set the boundaries – tell colleagues, customers, suppliers and your boss that you won’t be checking emails while you are away and that you will deal with them when you get back. Be sure to stick to it, otherwise no one will believe you next time.

Set an out of office message – so that anyone emailing you knows when they can expect a response from you.

Add a buffer day – to your out of office to give you a day to catch up before people start pestering you.

Delete the app – if you can’t trust yourself, delete the email app from your phone or tablet so you don’t get inbox anxiety as you see the number of emails increase daily.

Plan ahead – dedicate the morning of your first day back to emails to give you time to catch up. Having time to deal with emails on your return will reduce your anxiety about them building up.

Be kind to yourself – you are allowed to take a holiday, so leave the email alone!
